It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Department of Health Sciences at the Namibia University of Science and Technology. In January 2008, we had our first intake of students. Currently we offer four programmes, namely, a four-year professional Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences, a three- year of Bachelor of Environmental Health Sciences, a three year Bachelor of Pre-Hospital Emergency Care and a three-year Bachelor of Science in Health Information Systems Management.

Biomedical Sciences enable students to identify disease-causing bacteria, microscopically differentiate cells, microorganisms and crystals; and operate complex electronic instruments to analyse blood for the presence of abnormal and malignant cells, components and chemical elements. Students will also be able to determine drug levels and evaluate the chemical, cellular and immune composition of blood, urine and other body fluids.

Environmental Health Sciences play a vital role in preventative health care to prevent the outbreak of disease, as well as in health management systems as an integral part of the National Health Care programme in communities.

Emergency Medical CareGraduates of this programme will be able to competently integrate and apply theoretical principles and practical clinical procedures and techniques in order to independently provide emergency medical care to injured and/or ill patients within the scope of practice stipulated by the Health Professions Council of Namibia (HPCNA).

The Health Information Systems and Management Programme:  Graduates from health information systems management will be equipped with cognitive and intellectual skills and key transferable professional skills obtained during their substantial work integrated learning. The programme formulates a career both in the clinical and business sides of health care, with a prominence on Health care management, health data analysis, medical coding, health information ethics and law.
