Career Information session for German students held at the University of Namibia (UNAM)
For the fourth year in a row, the German Section in the Department of Language and Literature Studies, together with DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, hosted a special career fair for its German students to meet prospective employers and to get ideas about jobs and careers.
Every year the Section invites companies, institutions and NGOs, which are either German run or related to Germany, and even more importantly, where German language skills are a plus and where the section sees employment opportunities for its students. The event is compulsory for all students to broaden their view and give them ideas.
At this year’s event, representatives from companies such as Gondwana Collection, Deutsche Höhere Privatschule (DHPS) and Ohlthaver & List Group of Companies, shared tips on the importance of languages in one’s professional career, as well as graduate programmes on offer in the various organisations.
Lubowski Kadila, a former student in the German Section, talked about his company Anchor Adventures, what he does and how he started.
The presenters were also asked by the audience to tackle the question of “attitude and attire – how to be successful today.” Essentially, the representatives also shared with the students their views on professionalism, the importance of passion and enthusiasm for your job, motivation and eagerness to learn and grow, to be open to new adventures as important aspects and that money is not everything. The session concluded with a discussion on what a successful job interview looks like.
