WaterNet 2021/22 Regional Master Programme – Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM)
WaterNet invites applications for admission to the 2021/22 regional Master Programme in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) to be hosted by seven universities in the Southern Africa region.
STRUCTURE OF THE PROGRAMME
The programme comprises a compulsory core (consisting of 8 modules), a selected option (consisting of 4 modules), a groupwork project and a dissertation research project.
Entry Requirements
Participants are required to have at least a good first degree at Bachelor level (BA/BSc). The candidate should be able to show an orientation of
his/her field of study to water related issues.
Preference will be given to those with two or more years of relevant experience. The language of
instruction is English. Below are the preferred entry requirements for the various options.
Hydrology
Bachelor’s degree with a Hydrology or Environmental Science background or equivalent
Water Resources Management
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Agriculture, Science or equivalent
Water and Land
Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, Geography, Physical Planning or equivalent
GIS and Earth Observation
Bachelor’s degree with a Hydrology or Engineering background or equivalent
Water and Environment
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Earth or Environmental Science or equivalent
Water Supply and Sanitation
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Environmental Science or equivalent
Water and Society
Bachelor’s degree in Social or Earth Science or equivalent
Start of Programme
The programme starts in February of each year at the two host institutions.
Financial Assistance
WaterNet offers a limited number of scholarships on a competitive basis to nationals of SADC countries, including Kenya and Uganda.
Achieving Sustainability
The Masters programme has been successfully rolled for the past 18 years with the generous support from the governments of the Netherlands and
Sweden.
The aim of Phase IV (2017-2021) is to consolidate the Master programme and make it more sustainable for the future by sourcing fellowships from the region through support from individual SADC governments.
SADC Water Ministers have indicated their commitment towards supporting fellowships for their government staff and nationals. Once this is institutionalised, the funding is secured for a longer term.
It is envisaged that the national governments will have a strong say in who gets awarded a fellowship, but WaterNet will continue to coordinate the IWRM programme.

Acall for applicants is circulated to all SADC member states, WaterNet member institutions and affiliated partners mailing lists. The call is also available on the WaterNet website.
Applications should reach the Secretariat by 30 November 2020. If you have not heard from the WaterNet Secretariate by 31 December 2020, consider your application unsuccessful.
For this intake (2021/22), a letter of support for those requiring financial assistance from the applicant’s Ministry of Water will be an additional advantage.
