What is BACHELOR OF COMMERCE IN LAW ?

The BCom Law is a business law degree that equips graduates with the knowledge base, theory and methodology of commerce and the general rules of law. You will receive specialised knowledge in certain law subjects such as tax, accounting, governance and compliance.

Entry Requirement

• A STADIO formerly Southern Business School Bachelor of Commerce in Law (NQF 7); or
• an accredited Bachelor degree in the field of law, (NQF 7) with 360 credits.

In the event of an applicant not complying with the minimum admission requirements as stated above, he/she must complete the bridging modules (listed in Course Curriculum below) prior to commencing with the qualification.

Applicants who do not meet the stated admission criteria, but who have relevant work experience and/or prior learning may apply for admission under the policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). STADIO admits a maximum of 10% per cohort via RPL. What is the difference between BCom law and LLB?

A BCom(Law) degree complements the LLB, as it provides a broader perspective on issues such as taxation and commercial law. This degree allows a graduate to acquire an LLB within two years after completion of the BCom(Law) degree.

Is BA law or BCom law better?

The specialised BCom with Law degree is suitable for students who are interested in a specific field in business but who also wish to have a background in law. The BA degree provides superb training in critical thinking skills, exposure to new ideas, analysis of problems, creative thinking and problem solving.

Can I be a lawyer with BCom law?

The Bachelor of Commerce with Law (BCom) is a full-time 3 year degree. If you want to practise law, you need at least an LLB degree. While it is possible to enter an LLB at first-year undergraduate level, you are encouraged to complete a BCom or BA degree first, preferably with law as one of your majors.

You will need to enrol and complete an LLB Law Degree which is a four year degree, and this is the minimum requirement. You also have the option of completing the BCom Law Degree before the LLB Law Degree – however, this is not compulsory.
