Master of Industrial Engineering at Polytechnic of Namibia

Master of Industrial Engineering at Polytechnic of Namibia

What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial Engineering is an engineering profession that is concerned with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information and equipment. Industrial engineering is central to manufacturing operations.

Entry Requirement

The Master of Industrial Engineering seeks to recruit suitably qualified candidates who are capable of benefitting from, contributing to, and successfully completing the programme. In order to be considered for admission to this programme, applicants must: • Hold a Bachelor of Engineering degree, or a four-year Bachelor degree in a discipline that includes professional studies of the underlying subject matter in engineering with a component of supervised research, or an equivalent qualification at NQF level 8 from a recognised institution. • Demonstrate proficiency in English communication at post graduate level, as demonstrated by the fact that the undergraduate degree was done in the medium of English. If the undergraduate degree was not obtained in the medium of English, then the applicant will be required to show proficiency in the medium of English through achieving at least band 7 of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or an equivalent test. • Be employed or self-employed for the duration of the programme. An evaluation of the applicant’s academic record and a letter of motivation providing reasons for wishing to enrol for the Master of Industrial Engineering will be used for initial short listing purposes. All candidates on the final shortlist will be invited to a selection panel interview. As places are limited, all short listed candidates will be interviewed to: • clarify expectations to students, e.g. regarding work place research (e.g. enrolling in the programme assumes that they are employed and likely to remain so for the duration of the programme); and • to measure performance in potentially weak areas. A student presenting with a BEng is likely to be asked questions testing their communication skills, whereas a person presenting with a degree in a related cognate area is likely to be asked about their mathematical, statistical and design skills. This preliminary process is necessary to provide admitted students with the best potential of success.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the work of an industrial engineer?

Industrial engineers devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service. Depending on their tasks, industrial engineers work either in offices or in the settings they are trying to improve.

What is an example of industrial engineering?

Examples of where industrial engineering might be used include: shortening lines (or queueing theory) at a theme park, streamlining an operating room, distributing products worldwide (also referred to as supply chain management), and manufacturing cheaper and more reliable automobiles.

Is industrial engineering easy?

Industrial engineering is a difficult major because it requires you to take advanced math classes, multiple lab courses, and several challenging technical lessons. However, industrial engineering is easier than other branches of engineering such as mechanical and electrical.

Are industrial engineers real engineers?

Industrial Engineering is an engineering profession that is concerned with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information and equipment. Industrial engineering is central to manufacturing operations.

Is industrial engineering a good career?

Employers across multiple industries seek skilled industrial engineers for their ability to improve the efficiency and quality of production processes. The BLS projects that industrial engineering positions will grow by 10% between 2019 and 2029.

Do industrial engineers make good money?

The national average annual wage of an industrial engineer is $92,660, according to the latest data from the BLS. This just shy of $40,000 more than current average annual salary for all occupations, $53,490.

Why industrial engineering is the best?

This means that you will find a job easily after graduation. Technical skills and business acumen: many universities offer business modules as part of their industrial engineering programmes. You will gain a good grasp of the business side of a company.

Does industrial engineering need physics?

Industrial engineers may use knowledge of Maths, Physics but also Social Sciences to analyse, design, predict and evaluate the results and roadblocks of processes and devices.

Is industrial engineering in demand?

Do I recommend studying Industrial Engineering: Yes, engineers, especially Industrial Engineers are in demand now in our country.

What is the future of industrial engineering?

Employment of industrial engineers is projected to grow 14 percent from 2020 to 2030, faster than the average for all occupations. About 23,300 openings for industrial engineers are projected each year, on average, over the decade.

Is industrial engineering the same as civil?

The main difference between civil and Industrial engineers is that civil engineers are more like in the designing of infrastructure while Industrial engineers specialize in the making and implementation of workplace policies for maximum productivity.

Is industrial engineering a stressful job?

Stress is not uncommon amongst industrial engineers, with daily work sometimes being quite demanding.

What problems do industrial engineers solve?

Industrial engineers use their knowledge and skills to improve systematic processes through the use of statistical analysis, interpersonal communication, design, planning, quality control, operations management, computer simulation, and problem solving.

Is engineering hard to study?

Engineering ranks among one of the hardest degrees you can do. The degree requires you to have everything from logic and common sense to a tremendous amount of patience when things don’t go your way. Engineering can be very difficult because you’re essentially becoming a “professional problem solver”.

What math do industrial engineers need?

Students interested in studying industrial engineering should take high school courses in mathematics (algebra, trigonometry, calculus), computer science, chemistry, and physics. Entry-level jobs require a Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering.
