Namibia University of Science and Technology Bachelor of Engineering: Industrial Engineering

Namibia University of Science and Technology Bachelor of Engineering: Industrial Engineering

What is Bachelor of Engineering: Industrial Engineering?

The Bachelor of Industrial Engineering (BS) program objective is to help students apply scientific and mathematical principles to the design, improvement, and installation of integrated systems of people, material, information, and energy.

Entry Requirement

In addition to meeting the University’s General Admission Requirements as spelt out in the general rules, candidates must have at least 37 points on the Engineering Evaluation Scale, with a minimum 3 symbol in Mathematics, Physical Science and English at Grade 12/NSSC Higher Level. Only symbols on NSSC Higher Level will be considered for Mathematics, Physical Science and English. If a candidate does not have Physical Science, but has Physics or a “Physics equivalent” subject, the Registrar may upon recommendation from the relevant Head of Department and the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, approve registration of the candidate. OR Candidates must have successfully completed the InSTEM programme offered at the Polytechnic of Namibia/Namibia University of Science and Technology with at least 60 % in each of the Semester 2 courses prescribed for Engineering, that is, English I Practice (EPR511S), Introduction to Mathematics B (ITM402S), Introduction to Physics (IPH420S), Introduction to Chemistry B (ICH402S) and Engineering Skills (ESK402S). However, a score of 60 % in the above courses will not guarantee automatic entry into the programmes as selection will be based on merit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of engineering is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial Engineering is an engineering profession that is concerned with the optimization of complex processes, systems, or organizations by developing, improving and implementing integrated systems of people, money, knowledge, information and equipment. Industrial engineering is central to manufacturing operations.

What do industrial engineers do?

Industrial engineers find ways to eliminate wastefulness in production processes. They devise efficient systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, information, and energy to make a product or provide a service.

Is Industrial Engineering a good career?

As it stands, Industrial Engineering is one of the most sought-after specialisations out there today. It’s not difficult to figure out why Industrial Engineering is so popular: with such a wide range of skills, industrial engineers can work in both technical and managerial positions.

Who is an industrial engineer?

Industrial Engineers are primarily responsible for optimizing the production and manufacturing process to increase productivity and reduce waste. Their duties may include any of the following: Assess design, tools and materials involved in the production process.

What kind of math do industrial engineers use?

Industrial Engineers study various types of math including calculus, numerical analysis, statistics, linear algebra, numerical methods, operations research, etc. We do not necessarily use these in our day-to-day activities, but they help to build an analytical mindset that many employers value.

Where do industrial engineers work?

Manufacturing, technology, hardware, retail, healthcare – you name it and there is a high possibility of industrial engineering jobs.

Why should I choose industrial engineering?

You will gain a good grasp of the business side of a company. Understand big data: big data is a growing field and most companies want to make better business decisions by making use of complex chunks of data.

Is industrial engineer degree hard?

Compared to other engineering degrees, not as difficult. There is less math and technical courses usually deal in basic concepts. Degree of difficulty depends on the institution you select.

Is industrial engineering a stressful job?

Stress is not uncommon amongst industrial engineers, with daily work sometimes being quite demanding.

What subjects are needed for industrial engineering?

Industrial engineers will have to take a wide range of support classes such as calculus, physics, chemistry, circuits, and materials engineering. Although the most important support class that an industrial engineer will take is statistics.

How hard is the math in industrial engineering?

Industrial engineering does require strong understanding of linear algebra and probability. Operations research / logistics requires using several courses worth of advanced algebra / linear algebra. Statistical process control and Six Sigma require advanced statistics.

Do Industrial engineers need calculus?

It involves a lot of management skills. Optimization is the most commonly used calculus topic in industrial engineering for improving efficiency, materials, cost, etc., but industrial engineers also use other aspects of calculus.

Which engineering is best for girls?

Computer Engineering is one of the most sought after engineering career choices available to girl students in India. The best part of this course is this, that there is no field work at all. The expansion in IT sector and software revolution in India has also made this course demanding.23 O

Do industrial engineers use linear algebra?

A few linear algebra concepts are easily applied to the field of Industrial Engineering, especially in the Operations Research specialty.

Do industrial engineers use statistics?

Statistics also used in industrial engineering to characterize the intermediate and end product as well as imput material and to optimize the process. it also used in the development of new product design.

What concepts of mathematics are of importance to industrial engineering?

Physics mathematics in engineering applications is based around algebra, calculus, and trigonometry. In civil engineering the cost estimation of the project is very important and involve the basic principles of accounts and statistics.

What grades do you need to do engineering?

A levels – To get on to an engineering-related degree, you will usually require a minimum of two A levels, with three A levels and A/B grades required for the most popular courses. Entry requirements range from CCC to AAA, with the universities and colleges most commonly asking for ABB.

Can I do engineering without physics?

If you want to take a degree in engineering you need an A level (or equivalent) in maths. In many cases you also need physics. Some chemical engineering degrees ask for maths and chemistry instead; some ask for maths and physics; and some ask for all three.

How is algebra used in engineering?

Algebra is used throughout engineering, but it is most commonly used in mechanical, electrical, and civil branches due to the variety of obstacles they face. Engineers need to find dimensions, slopes, and ways to efficiently create any structure or object.
