The tiny private town of Solitaire is the only stopping point between Sesriem and Walvis Bay. With the original Tsondab General Dealer, Dutch Reformed church, and Solitaire Petrol and Tyre Repair, it’s a snapshot into the past and a much-needed oasis when crossing the vast stretches of the Namib.

Made famous by Ton van der Lee’s best-selling book, Solitaire, it continues the tradition of hospitality and shelter, food, and fun. At the centre of the 45,000 acre Solitaire Land Trust, the town supports habitat restoration efforts and protects free-roaming native wildlife, including oryx, kudu, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, springbok, brown hyena, cheetah and leopard. With a well-maintained private airstrip and AvGas on prior arrangement.

Accommodation

Solitaire Lodge features 25 spacious, en-suite rooms: 23 rooms with 2 x double mattresses, and 2 family rooms that can accommodate 5 people). Rooms are air conditioned, and have private decks facing the central courtyard garden and swimming pool with thatch shaded decks for lounging.

Adjacent Cafe van der Lee serves B&B guests delicious fresh breakfast, and dinner with an expansive wine list, draft beer on tap, and full bar. Indoor/outdoor dining with the Namib Desert and sunset views. Lunch is available at the Cafe or nearby McGregor’s Bakery, where the late Moose McGregor’s apple strudel is still fresh, still popular, and (almost) always available. The bakery also serves a variety of baked goods, sandwiches, fresh pizza, desserts, and espresso.
