CERTIFICATE IN BASIC MIDWIFERY
ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN MIDWIFERY & NEONATOLOGY

a. CERTIFICATE IN BASIC MIDWIFERY

The purpose of this one-year qualification is to prepare students as Nurse Midwife practitioners. This is a stand-alone certificate, which allows vertical alignment with the Diploma in Nurse Midwifery. This certificate entitles the candidate to registration with HPCNA. The program of study is delivered in direct (face-to-face) tuition, with web based integrated learning using the Moodle™ platform, with clinical practice throughout the year of study. Students receive face-to-face lectures in combination with online tutoring. All assessments are computerized, using security systems to ensure tamper-free assessments.

Nurse midwifery education is based on an understanding of health sciences theory and clinical preparation that shapes knowledge, judgment, and skills deemed necessary to provide primary health care management to women and newborns. The WHTC School of Nursing Nurse Midwife program meets the criteria for the American Midwifery Certification Board exam.

Midwifery practice as conducted by nurse-midwives (NMs) is the independent management of women’s health care, focusing particularly on pregnancy, childbirth, the post-partum period, care of the newborn, and the family planning and gynecologic needs of women.

Additionally, our students are typically exposed to approximately 50 births in diverse settings over the module of their studies and interact with service midwives who are also actively involved with students in the classroom setting.

b. ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN MIDWIFERY & NEONATOLOGY

The purpose of this two-year qualification is to prepare students as Nurse Midwife practitioners. This is a stand-alone capping qualification, which allows vertical alignment with programs of study at honours level within the following fields of study:

*     Humanities
*     Education
*     Health Sciences

Successful completion of the Nurse Midwife Diploma program may lead to admission into allied health science programs of study, and honors level programs of study offered at this Institution. This certificate entitles the candidate to registration with HPCNA.

The program of study is delivered in direct (face-to-face) tuition, with web based integrated learning using the Moodle™ platform, with clinical practice during 1st and 2nd years of study. Students receive face-to-face lectures in combination with online tutoring.

The School of Nursing provides diverse clinical placement opportunities for all of our students in a wide variety of settings, including international opportunities. Our clinical settings expose students to the entire spectrum of care – from practices that allow for high touch, low tech care like low risk home births to high volume, high risk hospital births. Additionally, our students are typically exposed to approximately 50 births in diverse settings over the module of their studies and interact with service midwives who are also actively involved with students in the classroom setting.

The ACNM describes the art and science of midwifery as being characterized by the following hallmarks:

The process of education at the WHTC School of Nursing begins with a solid foundation in primary care. The curriculum then builds to include pregnancy care and childbirth followed by newborn care. Clinical experience is integral through the program and culminates in an eight week intensive clinical experience. A range of opportunities are available to students for the intensive clinical experience.

WELWITCHIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING GRADUATE COURSES

BS NURSING SCIENCE

The purpose of this qualification is to prepare students for a professional nursing career (general). This is a stand-alone qualification, which allows vertical alignment with programs of study at honours and/or masters level within the following fields of study:

*     Humanities
*     General Sciences
*     Public Health
*     Education
*     Psychology

This qualification is a professional bachelor’s degree within the Field 09 (Health Sciences and Social Sciences): minimum of 480 credits (maximum 600 credits) required by SAQA and NQA.

SAQA exit level 7(8); NQA exit level 8

Duration: minimum of four (4) academic year’s full time study or six (6) years of part-time study

Successful completion of the BSc Nursing Science program may lead to admission into other postgraduate programs of study offered at our Institution.

Registration with the Nursing Council of Namibia is required.

Continuous assessment (CA mark) and end-of-semester / year written examinations (Exam mark) contribute to the final mark;

Weighting: CA (50%); Exam mark (50%)

In order to pass a module, a student must:

*     obtain the minimum examination mark prescribed for that module, which may be not less
than 50%;
*     obtain a final mark of at least 50%;
*     comply with the 60% sub-minimum in certain subdivisions of modules, if/or where
applicable;
*     a student passes a module with distinction if he or she obtains a final mark of at least
75%;

The WHTC administers computerized assessment in all modules, combined with OSCE (objectively structured clinical examination) pertaining to clinical knowledge and skill, using security systems to ensure tamper-free assessments.

The program of study is delivered via residential (face-to-face), and distance tuition, supplemented by clinical instruction. Internet connectivity is recommended, as well as access to a computer. Students receive online tutoring in online discussion forums.

All Masters and Doctoral degree programs of study are offered within the Ignaz Semmelweis School of Public Health.

WELWITCHIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

a. WELWITCHIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING DIPLOMA & CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS

Any candidate wishing to enroll for a Diploma or Certificate within the Clara Barton Scool of Nursing, must be at least 16 years of age.

A candidate wishing to enroll, must at least have a basic qualification in Nursing (e.g. Diploma in nursing or a Bachelors degree in Nursing Science).

For Certificates, the candidate must hold a post High School qualification made up of 120 credits at NQF level 5.

For Diplomas, the candidate must hold a post High School qualification made up of 240 credits at NQF level 5.

Selection will be made on the basis of merit, including any aptitude tests that might be required.

b. WELWITCHIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF NURSING GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

A candidate who wishes to enroll for the degree program within the Clara Barton School of Nursing, must comply with the following admission criteria:

*     A candidate must be at least 18 years of age.
*     A candidate must have obtained at least 25 points according to the APS scale.
*     A candidate must have obtained a minimum symbol D in English at Grade 12 level.

All students admitted to the 1st year of study who have obtained less than a (C) or (3) in the Grade-12 final examination for English, must register for the module Academic English, OR pass the WHTC English Exemption Benchmark test (part of Nursing Aptitude Scales) prior to commencement of the respective academic year (i.e. commencement of the Spring or Fall academic year) as proof of Academic English Proficiency;

All students admitted to the 1st year of study must register for the module Computer Literacy, OR pass the WHTC Computer Literacy Benchmark test prior to commencement of the respective academic year (i.e. commencement of the Spring or Fall academic year) as proof of Computer Literacy Proficiency;

All students admitted to the 1st year of study must register for the modules Study Methods (STU 101) and Critical Thinking (CRI 102);

The modules Academic English, Computer Literacy, Study Methods, and Critical Thinking, are academic prep modules and therefore not credit bearing towards the professional BS Nursing Science program of study;

Assessment of these prep-modules are done via online testing.

Credits earned by exam for prep-modules are reflected on the academic record of the student and a student may be exempted from having to re-do these modules in future, should such a student transfer to another program of study at WHTC;

Prep-modules mentioned above are bearing five (5) credits each, and these modules are offered during a period of block lectures prior to commencement of lectures reflected in the BS Nursing Science curriculum in order to equip all students and get them on par with their peers prior to commencement of the academic program;

Selection to the BS Nursing Science program is based on merit, including any aptitude tests that may be required.
