Conference Background

The University of Namibia is organizing an International Conference on Solar Power Systems for Namibia (SPSN18) from 16 – 18 May 2018. The conference is planned to take place in Windhoek, Namibia, – exact location still to be confirmed.

The main objectives of this conference will be to:

(i)           Create awareness, share and gain the latest knowledge and development trends on solar energy systems,

(ii)          Discuss the implementation of cost recovery systems.

(iii)         Educate high school teachers on the use of solar energy systems for economic and social development, and

(iv)        Design, construct and test simple solar thermal systems.

These objectives will be achieved through:

Day 1 (i) Presentations on advanced renewable energy systems (latest developments and trends)
Day 2 (ii)

(iii)

(iv)

Tutorial lectures on solar power systems,

Technical sessions: Practical demonstrations on solar power systems, and

Designing of solar energy systems.

Day 3 (v) Construction and testing of simple solar cookers

Our last conference concluded that about 50% children in rural areas of Africa do not have access to the use of light at night, and this severely affects their academic performance. Our main aim is, therefore, to light all such homes that go without light during the night – emphasis will be on solar lighting systems. Simple solar thermal systems will also be discussed, designed, constructed, and tested during the conference.
