The University of Namibia (UNAM) Bridging Courses

Depending on your background, there are many ways to be admitted for your undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Namibia.

These courses can provide you with the necessary study to meet prerequisite requirements for admission into your degree, or provide a foundation for your university study.

Need to tweak your English, Science or qualify for Engineering?

We offer a number of bridging courses to prospective students. These courses can provide you with the necessary study to meet prerequisite requirements for admission into your degree, or provide a foundation for your university study.

These courses are:
1. English Access Course

This 1-year full-time English Access Course aims to bring the students’ English to par with the minimum requirements for UNAM. The course is designed for students who have completed Grade 12 with a minimum of 25 points (that is; the top 4 subjects should be 22 points plus English with E or D-symbol). These students have reached the minimum required points for admission to UNAM, except the required minimum C grade in English. It is offered at the following UNAM Campuses: Katima Mulilo, Khomasdal (Windhoek), Oshakati, Rundu, Southern (Keetmanshoop) and Hifikepunye Pohamba (Ongwediva).

2. Science Foundation Programme

The 1-year face-to-face full-time Science Foundation Programme is a bridging course aimed at strengthening the skills and understanding of former Grade 12 learners in English and science subjects. Successful completion of the programme may lead to admission into a number of courses of study in science (including Military Science), agriculture, education, nursing and radiography. Prospective students will be admitted into the programme based on Grade 12 with a minimum of 22 points in five (5) NSSC subjects or equivalent grade 12 qualification, strictly with the following subjects and symbols: English (minimum
E), Mathematics (minimum E), Biology (minimum D), Physical Science (minimum D) and any other subject (minimum D) – as well the successful completion of an Aptitude Test on a date usually announced
in February or March each year. Learners from marginalised communities are encouraged to participate in this programme.

3. Pre-Engineering Programme

The 1-year face-to-face full-time Pre-Engineering Programme affords eligible students an opportunity to study the basic sciences, English and a core University course(s), to enable them for admission into
the first year of an Engineering degree course. This programme is only offered at José Eduardo dos Santos Campus in Ongwediva. Minimum entry requirements for admission into the Pre-Engineering Programme is 27 points in the best five subjects, as follows:

  • At least a “B” symbol in Mathematics and “C” symbol in Physical Science (or at least a “C” symbol in Mathematics and “B” symbol in Physical Science); plus at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O Level (IGCSE Level) or equivalent qualification, or
  • A score of “3” in Mathematics and in Physical Science (or a 3 in Mathematics and a 4 in Physical Science) plus a score of 4 or better in English at NSSC-H Level (HIGCSE Level)
    or equivalent qualification. If English was not taken at NSSC-H Level, at least a “C” symbol in English at NSSC-O Level will be required.

Applicants that have successfully completed Science Foundation Programme are eligible for admission into the Pre-engineering Programme provided they meet the minimum entry requirements.
